World: United Nations creates the International Panel on Biodiversity

Servindi, December 28, 2010 - The General Assembly of the United Nations approved the creation of a new body responsible for catalyzing the global response to the loss of biodiversity, as well as large forests, coral reefs and other ecosystems.

The new entity called the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) will focus on finding scientific solutions that support governments in decision-making processes in order to prevent the loss of animal and plant species and their ecosystems.

Furthermore, it will operate as an entity with consultative status, since it will be in charge of drawing up policies against global warming and will guide responses in this field.

Experts on environmental issues indicated that the creation of this body not only serves as an excellent closing for this year, known as the "International Year of Biodiversity", but is also a great way to promote the "International Year of Forests", which will begin in January 2011.
