September 18, 2018.- Indigenous communities of Guatemala are feeling the effects of deforestation. Increased agriculture, illegal logging and fires have reduced forest cover, and rising temperatures and unpredictable bursts of rainfall that wash away the soil are making it difficult for farming communities to sustain themselves.

IFAD’s Prodenorte project is involving over 42,000 members of indigenous communities into a coordinated action to reforest large portions of degraded land, learn how to make the most of native crops in a sustainable way, and manage their savings in a more efficient way.

Acquiring these new skills and practices will make them less vulnerable to the changing environment, allowing them to invest in their future and contribute to the preservation of Guatemala’s delicate ecosystem.
